The Need And Extent Of A Site Investigation

A professional approach to the construction of all civil engineering and building works has as an essential preliminary requirement the carrying out of a Site Investigation.

• assess the suitability of the site for the proposed works
• enable an adequate and economic design to b carried out
• foresee any construction problems that may arise
• assess the effect of changes on adjacent works
• advise on choice of site when alternatives exist

It is also accepted that the type, extent and cost of a site should be related to the characteristics of the project. Very simply, this means that for small and relatively simple structures a qualitative investigation together with the input of an experienced Geotechnical Engineer is sufficient. At the other extreme, for very large structures involving abnormal risks or very difficult ground conditions, the requirement would be detailed field and laboratory testing with the involvement of qualified and experienced Geotechnical Engineers.The best person to advise the Client on the nature of the investigations required is the Consultant.
